In 1839, Maori showed their hospitality to the arrival of the New Zealand Company ship Tory. William Wakefield, who was the representing agent, came to terms with some of the local chiefs to give them a settlement.

On the 22nd of January 1840, the first immigrant ship landed on the shores, an event that is still celebrated every year as Wellington’s Anniversary Day.

Just a few weeks after settling in, the Hutt River flooded, and many immigrants had to move to Thorndon.
